Overview
Nemesis is productivity software for macOS. It helps you stay focused by monitoring the work context you choose during an active focus session and interrupting you when you appear to be distracted.
The short version: Nemesis is inactive by default. No focus session means no monitoring. Release builds do not keep a Nemesis server archive of your screenshots, URLs, window titles, goals, or roast text.
Information we collect or process
Depending on how you use Nemesis, the app or backend may process the following categories of information:
- Focus session context: your stated goal, active app name, window title, browser URL, and distraction classification results during an active focus session.
- Screenshots: a screenshot may be captured during an active focus session when app, window, or URL context is too vague to classify reliably.
- Generated content: roast text and text-to-speech audio generated in response to detected distraction.
- Subscription information: email address, Polar customer ID, subscription status, plan name, renewal or expiration status, and related billing metadata from Polar.
- Local app settings: onboarding status, goal text, selected personality, pause state, launch-at-login setting, and cached subscription status stored on your Mac.
- Technical data: request metadata that hosting providers normally receive, such as IP address, timestamps, user agent, and server logs.
- Support communications: anything you send by email, including your email address, macOS version, troubleshooting details, and attachments you choose to provide.
How focus monitoring works
Nemesis uses Accessibility permission to identify your active app, window title, and browser context during focus sessions. It uses Screen Recording permission only when screenshot context is needed to classify an ambiguous situation.
These permissions support the core focus enforcement feature. They are not used to monitor you when a focus session is not running.
How we use information
We use information to provide and improve Nemesis, including to:
- classify whether your current activity matches your stated goal;
- generate the on-screen roast and spoken audio when distraction is detected;
- validate subscription status and prevent unauthorized access;
- provide support, troubleshoot bugs, and respond to your requests;
- maintain security, prevent abuse, and operate the website and backend; and
- comply with legal, tax, accounting, and business obligations.
Storage and retention
Release builds of Nemesis do not store screenshots, URLs, window titles, goals, or roast text on Nemesis servers. Screenshots sent for classification are intended to be transient and used to complete the requested classification or roast generation.
Subscription validation data may be cached in Vercel KV/Upstash for performance and reliability. Polar retains billing records, invoices, payment method details, and subscription records according to its own policies. Local app settings remain on your Mac until you delete the app data or change those settings.
Support emails are retained as long as reasonably needed to respond to you, maintain business records, resolve disputes, or comply with applicable obligations.
Third-party processors
Nemesis relies on third-party services to operate the app and website:
- Vercel: website and backend hosting.
- OpenRouter: classification, roast generation, and vision-based review when screenshot context is needed.
- Fish Audio: primary text-to-speech generation.
- Replicate: fallback text-to-speech generation.
- Polar: checkout, subscriptions, invoices, cancellations, and payment method management.
- Upstash/Vercel KV: subscription status caching.
- GitHub Releases: app download hosting.
These providers process information as needed to deliver their services. Payment card details are handled by Polar and its payment providers; Nemesis does not process or store card numbers.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as needed to operate Nemesis, provide support, process payments, comply with law, protect rights and security, or complete a business transaction such as a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets.
